Project 3 Upgrade

This is an individual design that I created. I have designed this in order to upgrade my third project - Brighton Fringe 2013. For this project we had to design 6 postcards, these are the themes, one for each postcard design.
1. Brighton Culture/Diversity
2. Bighton Family
3. Brighton Entertainment
4. Brighton Architecture
5. Brighton History
6. Modern Brighton
I want to upgrade my unit 4 grade, this unit is all about communication in art and design. For example a fire exit explains what to do with a simple person running or getting away from the danger.

In the first stage I took the photo of the Brighton Pavillion, and with this particular shot I used a 75-300mm lens which my friend lent me for the day. Unfortunately, I haven't been many recent parties that have balloons, so I got the balloon image off the internet. The birds were also part of a nice sky image. I selected the Pavillion and then painted it with soft edged brushes. This design went quite smoothly.I think that the 'Brighton' in the graffiti font isn't sharp enough, I could fix this by going over it with the sharpen tool, but I must be careful because I wouldn't want to make it too sharp. I refined my work by checking the resolution, I didn't really need to because I set it up correctly in the first place when I made a new canvas. To make the quality even better I would have taken this design into Adobe Illustrator, this is not only for the design's benifit but mine, because I could improve my skills and knowledge of how Illustrator works by experimenting. I could even attemp to design this in Illustrator.
The shape is one of the Brighton Royal Pavillion which has many interresting this to view like:
The Indian Millitary Gallery
Royal Reception room
The Great Kitchen
Royal Bedroom
The Banqueting
The Music room
The Mueseum
So plenty goes on in this palace, that is a part of Brighton an has been for 190 years! It was built for Prince Regent, later King George IV.
The colour always plays a part in what mood the design emits, so I have used is bright and vibrant. I have used these because they represent fun, happiness and togetherness. I say togetherness because I see each colour as one person or culture, and to see us all flying high and having fun as one instead of fighting with each other is always ideal. The balloons represent fun and parties. Whereas if they were all black for example, people would think a funeral was taking place.
The message of this design is 'this is a fun and wacky festival, come and see for your self, everyone is invited'.

Selsey Pond Ducks and Swan

This is on a photo-shoot with my friend Ria, this pond is nearby so we thought we might be able to get some good shots.

These are the best photos I could get, without them all moving either too close or far from me. Ria wanted to show the swan her pictures of him/her, whom didn't like them very much because he/she chased after us and bit Ria.

This is the look of the swan the moment before he/she chased
us away from the pond.
Evaluation
This photo-shoot went well, except from the demon swan. Ria was only about a meter in front of me, so when the moment came, she had a nano second to jump over me, but I dropped to the ground and rolled away (camera above my head). Thankfully the swan passed me, but went straight for Ria.

Health and Safety
The main health and safety pointer is not to trust or go near swans.
Do not crouch a meter behind someone.
Be careful around ponds or any liquid filled soil bowls in case you slip on the banks and fall in, this can be dangerous because we had cameras with us so they could have given us an electric shock.

'Go away Stalker Bird' and Earnley Butterfly Centre

This was an interesting photo shoot, my friend - Ria -  and I went to Earnley Butterfly centre. They have birds, butterflies, reptiles, ginuea pigs, rabbits and two donkeys.
This is Chucka, named by Ria.
Chucka seems to want to help Ria take a
picture, but in all truth he was nibbling
her camera.

As you'll soon find out for your selves, Chucka very much liked to follow Ria around.

This is Chucka and Ria together for the last time, we shortly
left after this photo.
Here, Ria is trying and failing to teach
Chucka not to bit or nibble.

Ria was the modern Snow White with this particular bird. Where as I kept getting the evil eye from one bird.

Before we left, of course we had a look round the rest of the centre. Here are just some of the photos I got.

This was favourite because of the pattern and the colours.
These were just a few of the many butterflies I captured moments of. Don't ask me all of their types because I have no idea.

This photo is slightly blurry and unfocused, I tried to use
pretty much anything that would stay still. But I just adore the
colours of this beauty.

I love the detail on this wing, I also find the transformation
incredible and fasinating.

This is the donkey they had there, they had another, but he was a
minature donkey.

This is Ash, named by the pair of us. Although I was resting my
camera on the fence, this picture is still slightly blurry around Ash's
nose, this is because ginuea pigs don't really stay in one place for
very long at all. I should have used the action setting or 12 pictures
per second.

This was Ria's favourite bunny whom she called pebbles.

This was my favourite bunny whom I called Rosa.

Evaluation
This photo shoot was interesting and funny. The only trouble I had was getting Ria away from Chucka and the reptile section, and she had trouble dragging me away from the rabbits. We had no trouble with getting each other out of the butterfly room, because it was boiling, as it needs to be, to keep them alive for so long. I could refine these with a new editing technique I learnt recently.
Health and Safety
We washed our hands after every different speices, we brought our own hand sanitiser although there were a few dispensers there.

Floral Photography

These are my some of my photos that I have recently taken on random visits to garden centers that have kindly allowed me to take pictures and also in my garden.

I like this, because although rain makes most people sad, it's also providing this flower with it's life need - water. I feel that
the leafy background is under exposed, but then the flower has the correct light exposure.

This beautiful berry bush is bright and full of spring spirit, which was when I took this. I like this photo becasue it reminds me of Christmas, although it's meant to be holly and red berries that represent Christmas. The exposure is correct.

This is one of my favourites, because of the white blending
into the purple. I see this as from innocent as white to becoming
our own innocent colour personality. The exposure is absolutely
correct.
I like this photo because for me, the already bloomed petals represent the people
who have already been born, but then the un-bloomed petals represent the new life
that hasn't yet caught sight of the light. The exposure is correct and brings the colour
out.

I think this is my best one out of this collection of photos, because my hands were
very steady, as for the exposure I guess this photo is the very slightest under
exposed.

I like this photo because my Nan would have too. But
also because lilac is one of my favourite colours. The
exposure is about right and it's not blurry.

Evaluation
This was a very fun investigation, it was extra fun because I had a friend with me, and we were taking pictures together, we encountered a haunted wendy house, which freaked the pair of us. The only stumble we made was when one of the garden center workers said we weren't allowed to take pictures of anything but the flowers, we said we understood and complied politely, and she seemed happier as well. I could refine these photos by editing them with a technique I recently learnt.
Health and Safety
We had to beware of any nectar attracted insects as my friend is allergic.
There was quite a bit of soil around so we had to watch where we stepped.
There were warning signs to bring awareness to the lines of ribbon around the blossom area, this is a possible danger because someone could walk or even run into it and strangle themselves.

Snow 2013

This was during the Winter break and is also an independent shoot of the snow at my house.
These are my favourite trees to photograph in the winter because of the amount of snow they get covered in. The one on the left I occasionally climb, this is one of the ways I get my ideas for each project. But it isn't my favourite tree to climb. The actual shot itself is good, although it's very slightly under exposed, I could have also used a tripod to make the quality better.

This another tree looking up through the vein like branches. I thought it looked interresting because the actual bark of the tree looks like a shadow for the snow. But with each branch they are near enough half branch and half snow, so it reminded me of ying and yang. I think the exposure could be a little bit brighter but it looks fine the way it is.

I like taking close ups of berries, flowers, and pretty much anything. This image has just about the correct exposure. But the only improvement I would tell myself for next year is to take a tripod with me. Because the picture is a little blurry.

This handsome young rabbit is Coco, and he is giving me evil eyes, I promise the whole reason I went out was also to give him a whole lot more hay/straw to snuggle up inand keep warm. But the photo itself isn't too bad, it's quite over exposed though, and I think I had the ISO a bit high the evidence is in the top left corner.
Evaluation
This investigation went well, plus it was fun! I also got to ambush my brother and mum with snowballs when they got home. The only moments I got stuck was with the berries because I had to zoom in quite a bit, then steady the camera, without it getting wet. I would improve these by editing them properly, as they haven't been edited at all yet, I have recently learnt new techniques to enhance the colour and sharpen the picture.
Health and Safety
The main issue was not to trip in to snow, or knock my head on the branches of the trees.

Saul Bass

Saul Bass (May 8, 1920 – April 25, 1996) was an American graphic designer and filmmaker, perhaps best known for his design of film posters and motion picture title sequences.

I am not sure of my feelings on this piece. I mean, I think they all send a message of freedom from war, the woman and the balloons could be celebrating her man coming home. The stick man looks dead, so there is sorrow in this one, but the number of  lives he saved by sacrificing his own is phenomenal. The man and woman running to hug are rejoicing which always a happy sight. The face with the tear must be grieving for someone, this could be a husband or wife or even child if they have any. The lower part of the body holding a broken sword is a sad but realistic part of war, men coming home with their lives but broken and disabled. The sun shade with the broken arm on and another hand pulling it down, is showing the men in hospital getting better. The birds are a nice finishing touch. Freedom.

This image is different to the ones above, at first I thought Bass was a better man than this. I really don't like designers that objectify women this, this is of only the lower part of a woman's body. At least Bass has enough respect that he shows the woman crossed legged. It's either that or it's a abstract picture of the number four.

Sandy Skoglund

Skoglund creates surrealist images by building elaborate sets or tableaux, furnishing them with carefully selected colored furniture and other objects, a process of which takes her months to complete. Finally, she photographs the set, complete with actors. The works are characterized by an overwhelming amount of one object and either bright, contrasting colors or a monochromatic color scheme.

This image is strange because since when do you see goldfish floating around the room.
Although because we can see two youngsters, one awake and one asleep, we think this is
just a dream either of them are having. Now the one sleeping seems to like them or the fish
like him, because one is snuggled up to him. I can't see properly because of the angle, but
the boy that is awake, seems to be holding one of the fishes but doesn't look alive. He could
have dreamed that he killed it, we take the body language into account which suggests to me
that he's sad about killing it, so he could have done it by pure accident or intentionally, I think
it more likely to be intentional, because he is right next to the shadows. But this could be out of
fear, he may not like fish, and so they scare him, he feels the need to protect himself.

This image is interesting because it reminds me of us humans. At some point in our lives we take something that isn't ours to take, in fact thousands do it everyday. By not giving to charity for example, we take people's lives. I am not saying that the whole fox species is like this but is frequently seen that way. Red is also a sign of danger, a thief, goes with the saying 'caught red handed'.
